The Pines Cottages

The Pines Cottages

Vintage * Private * Cozy

The Pines Cottages are a cute and cozy vintage ‘motor court’ located six miles north of downtown Asheville. Originally built in 1929 to accommodate tourists traveling along US Route 25, the year it opened the Pines had a friendly competition with theLog Cabin Motor Court next door to see who would open first; the Pines lost by a few months, but both businesses are still open almost 90 years later. Asheville in the late 1920s was full of ‘boarding houses’ and had Inns such as the Grove Park and Battery Park, but the motor courts were a different accommodation because they expected folks to just pass though, not stay for extended periods of time. Also called Tourist courts, Motor Courts began to pop up along the new American highways around the 1930s as more families began to own automobiles and ‘motoring’ became a popular American pastime. They were generally comprised of small single cabins with kitchens, bathrooms and a place to park the family car.

The original structures at the Pines were all log cabins - one room with a toilet. Over the years many of the original cabins have had to be replaced, although four still remain, including Cabin 1 that still has a skeleton key. In the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, cottages were added to the property, and today there are a total of 13 rentable cottages and cabins; the single cottages start at $125 a night and sleep 2-4 guests, and the 2 bedroom cottages start at $269 and sleep 6. There is a two night minimum stay, but since it’s like having your own little house in the woods these cottages are perfect for an extended vacation. The kitchens are stocked with coffee, condiments, pots and pans, glassware and utensils. Pets are welcome with a nominal fee, although cottage #2 is kept pet-free for guests with allergies.

There are multiple gathering places for guests throughout the wooded property, and the office has a small library of DVDs, games, books on hiking and waterfalls, and other information. The staff is friendly and familiar with the area, happy to create itineraries and provide other concierge services. The staff also tries to learn as much about guests as possible before their arrival, offering special surprises for birthdays, anniversaries, honeymoons and other occasions.

Allen Shumaker, Jr. has owned the Pines since 2000 when he moved to the area from Columbia, South Carolina. He has been working on renovatingand remodeling the cottages since then, updating and upgrading the buildings, and landscaping the four acres of grounds where they are located.

This is a home away from home experience, taking you back in time with the unique decor, but also offering modern amenities to make your stay comfortable.
